The Power of Simply Asking: Sharing the Gospel When Hearts Are Ready
He was ready—he just needed someone to ask him. And God let us be there at the exact right moment.
CJ and I have been going out each week to pray with people in our city. We never know who we’ll meet, but we’ve learned to pause, pray, and ask God where to go because He knows who is ready.
Recently, God led us to an apartment complex across from our church. At one door, we met Sebastian, a 23-year-old who was walking through deep struggles. We prayed with him, encouraged him, and invited him to come to church with us.
The next week, Sebastian decided to attend Celebrate Recovery at our church, and we went with him for the first time. He cried through most of the night, felt so loved, and afterward thanked us again and again. It was raining that night, so we offered to drive him to his apartment across the street. In the car, we began talking about Jesus and asked him if he was ready to accept Christ into his life. He said yes! CJ shared the gospel and led Sebastian in a prayer to receive Christ.
The work was already done, seeds had been planted by his brother and a friend, and God had been drawing him. We simply showed up at the right time and asked.
Sebastian then joined us at church the next evening with his brother and mom. God even arranged the perfect timing of the message that night on the gospel from Ephesians 2.
It reminds me of a story a pastor once told. During a role-play exercise at a seminar, he asked a woman if she wanted to accept Christ. To his surprise, she said, “Actually, yes, I really do.” She had been living with believers, attending church, and surrounded by Christians, but later she explained why she waited until that moment: “I was just waiting for someone to ask me.”
Jesus said, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.” (Matthew 9:37)
God is working all around us. Sometimes it simply takes being willing to listen to His leading and to take a step of faith and ask.
CJ often reminds me that when we share our faith, we can never fail—all we're doing is planting and watering seeds. It’s the Lord that brings the increase. Salvation is always the work of God.
All glory to Him. 🙏
