The Great I AM | Understanding the Self-Existent God
In Exodus 3:14, God revealed Himself to Moses in a way that changed everything: “I AM WHO I AM.” This was more than a name — it was a declaration of His eternal, self-existent nature.
When we study the I AM name of God, we remember that He isn’t defined by creation, by circumstances, or by us. He simply IS — eternal, unchanging, and completely reliable. That’s why we can rest on His promises, knowing nothing can shake Him (Hebrews 13:8).
Jesus also claimed this name in John 8:58: “Before Abraham was, I am.” With those words, He declared His divinity as the eternal God who has come close to us. Throughout the Gospel of John, His seven “I AM” statements show how the God who simply IS meets our personal needs — as the Bread of Life, the Good Shepherd, the Resurrection and the Life, and more.
As we begin this series, our prayer is that we hunger not just for what God does, but for who He is — the great I AM.
